The environmental message of Avatar The

Avatar , is the film of the moment, everyone is talking about and, for once, many for the luck of the cinema in general, go see it.
This is an absolute masterpiece? I think not, otherwise you do not fill the theaters for sure ... The masterpieces are never understood by now.
However I decided to talk about on this blog because I believe that the film has many advantages for both the environmental message that runs for his undoubted value to the historical-cinematic.
Avatar is poised to become a short film with the highest-grossing film history. Millions of people have already seen and many are preparing to go see it. The film's success at the global level is such that we can not limit themselves to a simple trend. Those of you who were willing to see this film are weapons of patience required to make a long queue to enter the cinema, prepare to pay a price higher than normal (fare in cinemas in Florence, € 10.50) and especially is about to wear the now famous and needed glasses for viewing three-dimensional.
assist admit to watching a movie with the room almost exhausted is not something I experienced for some time.

From movie fan I consider this an important and positive fact. Was it really necessary to give fresh oxygen to the cinemas in decline and crowded but once a year during the Christmas holidays. Ben films are therefore able to reverse this trend. I'll be a nostalgic, perhaps, but for me the film should be seen first of all to the movies.
What, then, that pushes even the most reluctant to go see Avatar ?
Among the merits of the film is without doubt the great ability to involve the viewer in a parallel world within which you can dive even apart from the stunning effects of 3 D. I am convinced that the film's success is contributing to its three-dimensional projection, but are also equally convinced that the film would also be a resounding success even if it were distributed only in 2D.
Among other things, I found a little 'hard to keep these heavy glasses for the duration of the film (over 160 minutes). And I'm not at all certain that the 3D in general, then the revolutionary invention they say.
The real effects that Avatar produces in the viewer are dell'immedesimazione offering the plot which is also built on an extremely simple and perhaps that is easily understood by all. All the stories that overlap and are narrated in the film we have been told in the past. There are dozens of movies that can remind Avatar: Dances with Wolves by to Pocahontas, from Jurassic Park to Titanic (which by the way, for those who do not know, was created in 1997 by the same director Avatar, James Cameron ), just to name a few, and not to mention the countless examples half of film (cinema films) that recall movies like night Effect of Truffaut, Hollywood ending Woody Allen, Sunset Boulevard Wilder, Contempt by Godard or The State of Things Wenders, to name only the first titles that come to mind. I
I found a great parallel with Rear Window .
if I remember correctly, all the known story of this masterpiece by Alfred Hitchcock revolves around the eyes of the protagonist. The public identifies herself with the protagonist in what he sees and knows only what he sees and knows. Rear Window rightly become part of film history, in the end does that represent a great metaphor for the viewer. The protagonist immobilized and locked in his apartment looking at the world outside from the windows of the house just as the viewer in the dark of a cinema that shows what looks to be that great window is the display.
mutatis mutandis James Cameron after more than 50 years adapting and updating it offers something similar to our own times and exploiting the enormous potential of new technology. What is being offered to the viewer who sees the film Avatar is a restatement of what the nth made in 1954 it Rear Window.
The viewer identifies herself, thanks to the use of 3D, the protagonist, which in turn identifies herself in the body of an alien being vivendone and feeling all the emotions and feelings. All this is further amplified by the fact that the same mechanism is involved in not one but multiple protagonists of the story told in the film.
But the brilliance of Avatar is not only that.
Cameron builds the perfect world in which many of us would like to move to live. What Pandora, the planet on which the story takes the Avatar - marked by mountains floating vegetation bioluminescent, multicolored flying beings with four wings - is probably the Paradise Found human imagination not only in terms of an irrepressible physicality and extraordinary beauty of the environment, but also on philosophical and moral people played by Na ' you living in total harmony with nature.
And here's the crucial aspect, as regards the environment, the value of the film: the message that Avatar is launched at the end that as environmentalists we strive to pass on to future generations and that, however vaguely, I also recalled the principles of permaculture, least in the constant search for balance between man and nature wants to pursue this new practice.
The true genius of James Cameron has been to create a special container so attractive and compelling as to be credible any kind of message he had decided at the end of pouring out. His goodness, Cameron has chosen the path of nature preservation and the Pacific.
The human species is one with nature and destroying it also condemns itself . The message, banal, if you will, at least for those who deal with some issues for some time takes a really huge significance if we consider the great difficulties and the enormous efforts that convinced every environmentalist takes to transmit it to others.
This film will be seen by hundreds of millions of people. We should be happy.
Certainly the message to protect the environment may be too conventional. If I did not know the filmography of the director (in recent years has focused on achieving nature documentaries), and his political convictions ( James Cameron, after the second Bush victory the 2004 U.S. presidential election, chose to withdraw its application for U.S. citizenship), I am tempted to speak of opportunism on the part of Cameron that exploits the tendency of ecology, now very fashionable, and able to provide them with an easy success.
In fact, I think back this choice there are any real convictions. Moreover
not be explained otherwise, the solutions adopted in the construction of the screenplay, too accurate, logical and complex not to be the result of deep convictions.

If you're still able to move and adult children back for a few hours, forgetting the reality and accept with enthusiasm the desire to live a fairy tale, go and see this movie. You will be entertained.
If not, and a little 'pity you, you better save the time and expense.

"Ricicletteria" Florence

against excessive traffic pollution and the use of bicycles as an alternative to public transport, is returning with more and more spread out.
Moreover, the statistics indicate that in Europe more than 30% of trips made by car cover distances of less than 3 km, (Source: Eurobarometer - European Commission for the Environment) of all tackled so by bicycle.
The bike can actually be a good response and contribute materially to improving the quality of life, especially those living in the city. The advantages are many: economic (reducing costs for travel, reducing waste of time due to traffic jams), politicians (reducing energy dependence, saving non-renewable resources), environmental (reduced greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants).
In this we add the important health benefits for people who cycle.
In cities such as Parma in Italy bicycle use is shared by more than 20% of its inhabitants and Ferrara (nicknamed this "city bike") well over 30%. A
Florence, on the basis of a survey conducted by the Associations City Cycle Firenzeinbici and in 2008 there were about 30,000 bicycles each day were used, corresponding to about 28% of the vehicles that moved within the LTZ, with an increase of no less than 88% compared to similar data in 2000.
And it is precisely in 2000 that begins with the beautiful design of Cooperativa Sociale " Ulysses." Until then, the City had the problem of having to dispose of the hundreds of bicycles removed (because it resulted in a state of abandonment) from the streets of the city and piled up at the Municipal Depositeria. The Cooperative
Ulysses as part of a broader project related to the promotion and development of the use of bicycles, both in terms of alternative mobility, both in leisure and tourism, in 2001 he received the assignment from the City of Florence bicycles Hall of Depositeria ( thus prevent their destruction final), which are repaired in a special workshop at the Institute of Criminal Sollicciano created in order to train the inmates to a professional activity to be carried out later from prison. A 'further factory was opened also at the juvenile prison in Florence A. Meucci always.
Since 2008, in support of workshops active in Penal Institutions, the Coop. Ulysses has opened a new laboratory in Florence Via Giano della Bella, 22 in order to offer you support the activity of the workshop and especially Sollicciano be a point of sale which allow the public direct purchase of used bike repaired and restored.
The activity of this workshop is external to the cooperative an opportunity for some of the inmates who work in alternative measures to prison, they can find stable employment and a place for those who have no employment opportunities as persons belonging to weak. In fact, the repair and sale of bicycles by inmates of the prison and the Institute of Juvenile Sollicciano allows them to obtain a decent salary.
The staff workshop, supported by specialist staff, also aims to train disadvantaged young people in employment in general and specifically to the repair of bicycles for sale later. The proceeds from the project's aims are the exclusive promotion of these activities.
addition, the workshop via G. Bella also plays the role of point of care and repair the bikes for another project of the Cooperative Ulysses in this area or the project Mille and a bike "in collaboration with Firenze SpA Parking now running for a dozen years and allows the hiring of about 200 bicycles the territory of the Municipality of Florence .

As with any initiative effective and functional, even for the very Ricicletteria of Florence has helped the word of mouth among citizens. By now many people are familiar with this initiative and if they need to buy a bike is to look into Via Giano della Bella. The prices of these bicycles "restored", as times are very competitive with the market for new bikes. Usually it starts from € 40-45 for a bicycle up a man or woman. But he recovered, and then you can buy here, even children's bikes.
"The request, on the existence - explains the responsible for the cooperative sector of the bike, Marco Biagini - a is in some times of the year so high that sometimes need to book your bike to make sure the purchase that day or wait a few new bikes come from Sollicciano restored. "
The Cooperative is made available to be picked up at the home old bikes to fix, make repairs from recycled materials small sales to public and / or private hire for short / medium / long term.

short, a really good example that combines a commitment to the environment with that in the social field.
Those of you interested can find more information on the site of the Cooperative at the following address: http://www.cooperativaulisse.it/

Councillor for Mobility for the City of Florence, Massimo Mattei, said last September that the bikes in the last four years removed from the streets of the city and then donated to the Cooperative Ulysses were well and that the 4863 'administration intends to continue to encourage this through initiatives such as the use of alternative mobility to combat the problems of traffic. In support of this commitment, last November the City Council of Florence has unanimously approved a motion that promotes the use of bicycles as a supplement to public transport.

now seem very distant times when on July 13 1944, because of the ambushes perpetrated by the partisans against the police, the military commander of Florence, Col. Golden, in the interest of public safety, with a special ordinance forbidding the city of Florence to the entire population using Bike announcing that "offenders will be punished to the end of martial law Germanic."

But as they say in these cases, this, fortunately, is another story ...

Calculate Your Ecological Footprint

Today most of us live in cities and tend to forget too easily the close connection with nature instead of in is integral part. To buy the food we go to a store using money taken from an ATM and, later, we get rid of waste products leaving them in the bin near the house or through the toilet.
In fact when we eat, drink, breathe, we are constantly exchanging energy and matter with our environment. We need to constantly and continuously produce energy waste and waste of various kinds.

continually draws resources from nature, but not often we ask a fundamental question: are we sure that the use of these products is not faster than the time they need to regenerate? We are confident that our discharge Waste is not faster than the time required to them to be absorbed?
Unfortunately, today we know only too well the answers to these questions, modern society behaves as if nature were an expendable part of our economy. Over land use and waste production not only reduces the future productivity of the planet but could lead to the collapse of the entire ecosystem.
E 'now obvious to many the need to intervene and change our patterns of development, but to do so is first necessary to know in detail what the flows of matter and energy drawn from natural systems. We are far from sustainability, but how far? If we are not able to measure, we have the opportunity to act.
How, then, just consumes all of us?
E 'own attempt to provide an answer to this question that was born the concept of "Ecological Footprint . Who wants to read up in detail on the subject will also rely on what has now become a classic among texts that deal with sustainability, " The Ecological Footprint - Reducing the impact of man on Earth" (Edizioni Ambiente, €. 20.00) of Mathis Wackernagel and William E. Rees . These two ecologists were the originators of the concept in 1994 and published a first edition of this book in 1996 followed in the ensuing years other accompanied by the progressive updates. What exactly does this then
Footprint? It is a calculation tool that allows us to estimate the resource consumption and subsequent demand for assimilation of the waste by a specific human population and to express this quantity in terms of area (measured in hectares) of productive land equivalent. Thanks to the ecological
we can essentially determine how many resources we draw from the planet and what is the capacity (the biological capacity, in fact) of the planet to continue to provide. E Today we can do this calculation at all levels: from that which concerns the individual, until the Footprint of a city, a nation, a continent.
Today this method has undoubtedly its strong educational value and awareness of sustainability issues, is getting confirmations also important scientific and political (since 2000, the Ecological Footprint is an integral part of the biennial report of Living Planet Report United Nations Environment Programme. The European Union itself, he added, for some years now, the Ecological Footprint to 10 European local sustainability indicators). To provide uniformity of
then procedures to be global Ecological Footprint was born Global Footprint Network (website http://www.footprintnetwork.org/ ) coordinating the activities of the now hundreds of researchers involved in this method all over the world converge on the importance of the impression that as a way to increase public awareness of our impact on nature and our dependence on it.
We have said that the Ecological Footprint measures the consumption of natural resources by humans, or how much territory and how much biologically productive surface covered in water are used by an individual, a country, region to produce the resources it consumes and to absorb the waste it generates. It is then compared to nature's capacity to renew these resources.
For example, the footprint of a country is the total area required for:
- Making the food they eat
- Take the waste of its energy
- Provide space for infrastructure
More details are exactly 6 The main areas of consumption that will be considered for calculating the ecological footprint: the agricultural land, the pastures the forest areas, the areas fishing the Territory and built the so-called Land Energy (ie, the productive area needed to sequester the CO2 produced by the use of fossil fuels and sufficient to prevent the increase in atmospheric concentration of this gas).
usually proceed first to calculate the Ecological Footprint measuring in global hectares per capita (eg 'Italy 's ecological footprint equivalent to 4.9 hectares per capita ), then it is compared with what is biocapacity that territory always calculated in hectares per capita (in this case Italy is estimated to have a biological capacity equal to 1 hectare per capita), and finally we can deduce the ecological deficit (characteristic of industrialized countries) or the Ecological Reserve (still common in the case of low-income countries). L ' Italy, according to 2006 data, it appears to have a deficit , easily deduced from the data above, or of 3.9 hectares per capita! That every inhabitant, with the current way of life, resources consumed almost four times higher than those esteemed him!
course, a factor that affects much of this calculation is the impact that demographic as we know, today is constantly increasing.
Experts estimate that by 2050, the population on Earth today around 7 billion, will reach 9 billion people.
The planet's resources, however, always remain the same, and therefore we shall divide into smaller and smaller pieces ...
Below I attach a summary sheet ( click on it to enlarge ) updated to 2006 and published on the site http://www.footprintnetwork.org/

for Today cope with the consumption of resources at current rates without affecting the sustainability of the Earth we need about another half a planet and always according to current rates of consumption, and the progressive increase in population, around 2040 the planet Earth will become necessary to us even 2!

course, as illustrated by the graph above is still possible to reverse this trend, provided to engage, together, to change their lifestyle by taking behavior and respectful.

To calculate your carbon footprint go to this address and double click the image that will appear, choose the area of \u200b\u200bthe planet in which you reside:
http://www.footprintnetwork.org/it/index.php / GFN / page / calculators /
wait a bit 'because the connection is slow ...

Alternatively, and thanks to our Friends of the WWF is now possible to calculate what our carbon footprint which remains the largest item among those taken into account for calculating the total footprint. Even in this case the calculation can be easily done by anyone. This is a partial calculation but still indicative of our lifestyles and consumption and help to understand our potential excesses in consumption.
Before we proceed to this count, some recommendations. You must munirvi advance of certain vital information:
- bills of electricity and fuel gas last year
- How many miles does with your car in a year
- How many grams of CO2 you emit car per kilometer (it can detect or vehicle registration, or are linked to your car your car).
